Expectations

We encourage everyone to come out for soccer no matter their ability level. We will not make any cuts and you will be placed on a team according to your soccer abilities and fitness levels. The most important qualities are improvements over previous seasons, a good attitude, and being a great teammate.

Technical Skills

At tryouts, we will do drills and look for the following:

• Speed with the ball: dribbling with and without cones
• Striking: distance and accuracy with both feet
• Crossing: from the outside of the field to the center (or far post)
• Shooting: power and accuracy with both feet
• Defending: one-on-one and with teammates
• Passing accuracy with both feet
• Ball control: first touch, ball out of the air, and beating players 1v1

Juggling

• Everyone should be able to juggle at least 25 times with their feet! Returning players should increase their juggles by at least 20 juggles. We will be evaluating you on this during the first week of practice.

Fitness Standards

Two fitness tests are conducted during tryout week:

Shuttle Run (Cone Test)

• 12 total shuttles: To the 50-yard line, back to start, then end at 50-yard line (so total of 150 yards)  in 30 seconds
• 35 seconds of rest between each sprint

2-Mile Run

• Goal: Complete in 16 minutes or less (we added a minute!)
• Route: MS parking lot → past baseball fields → Willow Dr. → Kelly Pkwy → Old Crystal Bay Rd → back
• Players who have not previously met 16:00 minutes are expected to improve their time
• Players who have previously met 16:00 minutes do not need to beat their prior time (injury prevention)
• Optional early run dates will be offered. So, watch for announcements.

To prepare: be physically active 4–5 days per week this summer

• Club players: rest when your season ends, then gradually rebuild with the ball
• Non-club players: work with a soccer ball 3–5 days per week for at least 1 hour

Earning Shuttle Reductions

• Run a certified, officially-timed 5K (3.12 miles) in 26:00 or less (26:01 does not count)
• Race must occur between June 4 and August 16
• Submit proof (official results or finish-line photo with time) to Coach Murray before August 17
• Reward: 2 shuttles off

• No extras completed = 12 shuttles
• All volunteer events only = 6 shuttles
• All volunteer events + 5K in 26:00 = 4 shuttles

• Polar Plunge = 1/2 shuttle (if raised $100+)
• Shoreline Fire Department = 1/2 shuttle
• Referee 3v3 = 1/2 shuttle
